Algae to Fuel

- As the realization takes hold that rising energy prices are less a momentary blip than a restructuring with lasting consequences, the high cost of fuel is threatening to slow the decades-old migration away from cities, while exacerbating the housing downturn by diminishing the appeal of larger homes set far from urban jobs.
- Alaska – Governor Sarah Palin today urged members of Congress to enact legislation that would allow oil and gas development in a small portion of the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge.
- Drilling in ANWR will produce eleven times as much gasoline as the total that is saved by all forms off mass transit, combined. There is enough petroleum in ANWR to produce a million barrels of oil a day for 30 years. At today’s prices, that would reduce the payments we make to foreign governments and their captive oil companies by around $1 trillion.
- House Democrats failed Tuesday to resurrect a bill to punish price gouging at the gas pump, while maneuvering to block Republican attempts to expand offshore drilling, an idea gaining in popularity amid $4-a-gallon gas prices.
- To encourage a transition toward alternatives, Obama favors legislation that would make fossil fuel more expensive. Doesn’t that mean more pain to come under an Obama presidency? “There is no doubt that in the short term, adapting to this new energy economy is going to carry some costs.”
- Fuelishness! FlashBack - October 19, 2005 - With gas prices hovering around $3 a gallon, a lot of people say they’re making big sacrifices so they can afford to fill their gas tanks. They’re cutting back on travel, curtailing shopping expeditions, going out less often.

Scientists propose modifying “MPG” to “gal/100mi”
Here’s a great idea that’s already used around much of the world. In the U.S. we think of fuel efficiency in terms of “miles per gallon” (MPG) - and in most of the rest of the world where the metric standard of measure is used, they already measure fuel efficiency with “liters per 100 kilometers” ( l/100km).
Two scientists from Duke University propose that modifying the way we express fuel mileage can help people understand the concepts of “better mileage” more easily. They propose an expression of “gallons per 100 miles” be adopted.
Richard Larrick and Jack Soll of Duke University in the US say that a simple switch from expressing a car’s fuel efficiency in miles per gallon (mpg) to gallons per 100 miles makes it much easier for people to assess how much money they could save on fuel.
They showed that people think of fuel efficiency as linear. If this were true, doubling the fuel efficiency of a gas guzzling SUV would save the same amount of fuel as doubling the efficiency of a smaller more efficient car.
In fact, the relationship is not linear and doubling the efficiency of an SUV saves far more than if you own a small car (see graph, right).
I think it’s an idea worth trying, and will incorporate this as an alternate SOM view in FuelClinic reports and displays in the next updates made to the software.
Prototype Generators Run on Garbage
There are two prototype garbage-chewing generators helping power Camp Victory in Iraq. They’ve been in operation since early May, and run on a pseudo-propane that is created by burning plastics and fermenting food wastes.
It still requires some diesel fuel, but only 5% of a conventional powerplant, and allows the military to save fuel, reduce the need to transport fuel, reduce the amount of garbage that needs to be disposed of, and reduces risks to troops and contractors by reducing the frequency of convoys trucking fuel and garbage around Baghdad.

About 50 percent of the diesel that the military burns in Iraq is devoted to transporting more fuel. And about half of that gets poured into generators and stoves. Which is not just a huge waste of time, money, and effort. It’s also a security issue. “Those convoys that carry fuel are also known as targets,” Army biotech scientist Dr. James Valdes tells a group of bloggers. “So our logic was that at a forward operating base, could we use the garbage to make fuel and thereby get rid of the garbage and help to keep the convoys off the streets.”

Americans drive 4.5 billion fewer miles in April: report
Americans drove around 4.5 billion fewer miles in April compared with the same month last year, marking the lowest mileage clocked on US roads for the month since 2003, a report showed Thursday. The Federal Highway Administration (FHA) said in its monthly report that the number of vehicle miles driven in the United States fell by 1.8 percent, to 245.9 billion, based on preliminary data from the state highway authorities across the United States. The number of miles traveled in April 2003 was 239.7 billion, FHA data show. The miles traveled on US roads rose from 132.7 billion miles in 1983 to a peak of 250.9 billion miles in 2004, according to the data on the FHA website. 3 Steps Govt. Can Use to Reduce Oil Prices
Regardless of what you think of his politics, Newt makes some salient points in this clip:
Just found a great fuel-economy-related blog…
…it’s so good, in fact, I’m going to send you there right now - Ecomodder.com. I found it while doing some research for FuelClinic.com - and I am very impressed with the depth of information and amount of activity there.
For instance:
2008 marks the first time since 1979 that there has been a drop in miles travelled in over the month of March. This drop corresponds to 11 billion less miles traveled, according to FHWA. Over the first quarter of 2008, greenhouse gas emissions from the transportation sector have also dropped 9 million metric tons compared to past years, something that no amount of political posturing has yet to accomplish.
and:
As gas gets more and more expensive and drivers become more and more afraid of trips to the pumps, more people than ever have found themselves stranded on the side of the road with no gas in the tank. Trying to push it way past “E” is something I’m familiar with, but after hearing about this, perhaps I’ll be a little more careful.
The blog is on a website of the same name, which is a collection of forums for people interested in modifying their cars to improve their MPG. There are several impressive projects where individuals have altered their aerodynamics or engine to wring a few more miles per gallon.
I’ll be adding this site to my growing list of sources for ideas and information. If you are interested in pushing the fuel economy envelope, or would like to learn more about “ecomodding” or hypermiling, you could spend all day at this site just getting up to speed on the subjects.

FuelClinic Downtime…
There was a system outage this morning that resulted in users not being able to access the Dashboard. I believe the problem has been corrected (it happened during a core code update from late last night - how embarrassing!), and everything should be functioning again. - Doc
