- Record high prices for gasoline probably won’t drop before the November election, Republican John McCain said Wednesday.
- Violence broke out at the gas pumps in Orange County. Police say a La Palma doctor waiting in line to buy gas at the Costco warehouse store in Cypress grabbed a tire iron and confronted a motorist who cut into the line.
- The president of the European Central Bank, Jean-Claude Trichet, on Monday called on oil producers and consumers to learn from past mistakes if Western economies were to avoid a repeat of the high inflation and unemployment that followed the first global oil shock in 1973.
- One bicyclist was dead and another injured two days into a week promoting safe bicycle commuting in the Chicago area.

- OPEC’s Secretary General on Tuesday appealed for calm, saying the record-high crude oil price was unbearable and did not reflect any shortage of supply in the market.
- In its monthly oil market report, the IEA said “supply growth so far this year has been poor and higher prices are needed to choke off demand to balance the marketâ€.
