Shea Holbrook to Make Rookie World Challenge Run in 2010
GROVELAND, Fla. (Feb. 4, 2010) – Shea Racing, LLC. is proud to announce its participation in the World Challenge season opener, March 26-28, at St Petersburg, Fla. Team owner and driver Shea Holbrook, 19, of Groveland, Fla., will strap-in and make her debut professional road race in the World Challenge Touring Car (TC) class. According to series archives, Shea is one of the youngest female drivers to take the grid in World Challenge history.
Holbrook is a competitor thru-and-thru. Formerly a state-, regional- and nationally- ranked water-skier, she is no stranger to the thrill of speed or danger. A few years ago, Holbrook traded in the water skies for the smell of race fuel and burnt rubber.”It’s an awesome experience go over a jump at 50-plus mph to hurl yourself hundreds of feet thru the air, but it just doesn”t compare to going into turn 17 at Sebring at 100-plus mph,” Holbrook said.
Holbrook is currently a college student studying Broadcasting and wants to make motorsports a career.
“This being my first professional race, I have two goals,” Holbrook added. “First, to bring the car home in one piece and second, for all those veteran drivers out there that read this, regardless of where I finish, I plan on giving you all the respect that you deserve and I’m thankful for having the opportunity.”
There are many people in the motorsports world that have greatly enriched Holbrook’s life. People like John Doonan (Mazda Motorsports), George Ayres http://www.greenerspeed.com , Skip Baber Racing, Lyn St James http://www.lynstjames.com and Marcus Haselgrove http://autohausmotorsports.com, to mention a few, “thank you all for your friendship, wisdom and continued support.”
Currently Shea Racing’s primary sponsor is MD&F (Mom, Dad & Friends) but we are diligently trying to change this. We do have very creative marketing plan for interested companies that actually requires no upfront capital, so if you’re interested in finding out the details please contact www.SheaRacing.com .
We would like to thank World Challenge and SCCA Pro Racing for the opportunity and look forward to a great season. See you on the grid!

FLASH: #55 FuelClinic.com Camaro invited to race in “24 Minutes of Daytona” this weekend
Today I recieved a call from an excited race car team owner Mike Kern, “We’ve been invited to race in the Rolex 24 Heritage Exhibition (aka “The 24 Minutes of Daytona”)… and I need you to help me prep the car…”
The Camaro was on display at the Grassroots Motorsports Magazine tent area, as planned, but race organizers found Mike today and told him that he had been invited to race – but the email went to his previous job’s email account… so he didn’t know until today.
Mike and Kurt scrambled back to the shop to get all the fixings needed to get the Camaro prepped for the race, file the required paperwork, and get ready to move the car to the paddock tomorrow for race prep.
Race updates all weekend will be thru the FuelClinic Facebook Fan Page – become a fan of our page and stay updated to the happenings this weekend.

MJK Racing #55 FuelClinic Camaro Wins 1st Place in 2009 Central Florida Region SCCA GT-1 Points Championship
Congratulations to Mike Kern and the MJK Racing Team with the #55 FuelClinic.com Camaro for winning first place in the 2009 Central Florida Region (CFR) SCCA GT-1 Points Championship. Results were released last week.
“Without the hard work and help of my crew, FuelClinic.com, JR Motorsports engines, Outerwears, and our other marketing partners it would have been impossible to achieve what we did this season”, said Kern.
The Central Florida Region (CFR) SCCA is one of 18 regions in the Southeast division, with 9 divisions total in the US. Seven regional and divisional events made up the 2009 schedule, consisting of 14 actual races over the event weekends we were able to win the Championship due to great finishes in 5 races in which the team competed.
- 2 first place finishes
- 1 second place finish
- 1 third place finish
- 1 forth place finish
Points accumulate at each race, with a total of 46 Championship points putting MJK Racing in first place overall. Second place long time GT-1 racer Bob Borders finished second with 30 points
Eight GT-1 racers competed in the points championship, not including guest racers from other regions that competed at the famous Central Florida SCCA Region tracks – Daytona International Speedway and Sebring International raceway.

Fuelishness! Feed: Holiday gas prices up from 2008; Yes, we always wanted efficient cars; Fleets use technology to save fuel; NASCAR getting greener
- Gas prices chugging higher as holidays near — Americans are paying more for gasoline than they did last year as the holidays approached – billions of dollars that could go to books, clothes and Barbie dolls instead being spent at the pump. Gas averaged nearly $2.70 a gallon Friday, the highest of the year – adding bad news to an already fragile economy and making it even less likely that people will spend their way out of the recession.
- GM Insider Admits Company Knew Consumers Demanded Efficient Vehicles Decades Ago — McManus conducted research for GM. He even admits to changing survey results to fit with corporate beliefs. As McManus said, “The survey would estimate that people would estimate fuel economy fairly highly. Being a good economist, I said, ‘No, they don’t,’ and I changed the results. [...] Our job was not to seek the truth, but to justify decisions that had already been made.”
- Truck Fleets Prioritize Fuel Savings, High-Tech Features — Fleet owner demands for fuel savings, environmental benefits and high-tech features now outweigh brand names as companies make buying decisions, according to a global IBM study. The study shows trucks will become more fuel efficient, environmentally sound and safer due to the adoption of new technologies throughout the vehicle, which will also help truck manufacturers differentiate their vehicles as brand names become less important.
- NASCAR, rooted in fossil fuels, turning over new, green leaf – The Green Challenge was developed through a joint effort by the Department of Energy and the Environmental Protection Agency to create protocols for making racing greener by promoting advanced propulsion and fuel technologies. The Department of Energy has met with NASCAR officials, and an official says the government wants racing to help develop technology that’s less polluting.
FuelClinic.com Camaro takes 1st Place at Sun Stroke Grand Prix – Daytona International Speedway
Congratulations to Mike Kern of MJK Racing and the #55 FuelClinic.com Camaro as they take 1st place in the 2009 Sun Stroke Grand Prix last weekend at Daytona International Speedway.
Despite a broken intake rocker arm in Saturday’s afternoon race, Mike Kern and the #55 FuelClinic Camaro crew (with the generous help of several seasoned engine witch-doctors) managed to find a replacement rocker and fix the engine in time to compete in both Sunday races, taking 1st place in the last GT-1 race of the weekend.
From V8StockCar.com: Mike Kern picked up a GT-1 win on Sunday afternoon, surviving a brief shower that made the going treacherous. Mike broke a rocker arm in the morning race, but determined to make the next race, made some calls to local shops until locating a replacement piece. His www.FuelClinic.com crew quickly had the racer repaired with plenty of time to spare.
FuelClinic has been sponsoring this race team for over a year now, and with the help of Mike Kern and the team, we have been reaching out past the “eco-conscious crowd” to reach thousands of race fans, business owners, fleet managers, as well as the media with our message that “eco-driving is for everyone“. We also use the car as a test-bed for new equipment and ideas, recently “torture-testing” a new data-logger that may be integrated with certain FuelClinic accounts.
We believe that the information and services provided by FuelClinic can help everyone learn how to live their lives comfortably and still use less gasoline (saving money), help create safer and less congested roads, reduce the stress of jockeying in traffic, and reduce pollution and emissions.

Interview with Michael Bragg, creator of FuelClinic.com
Michael Block of the Examiner came out to visit the #55 FuelClinic Camaro and team at the SCCA South Atlantic Road Racing Championships last weekend. He wanted to learn more about FuelClinic, what we are trying to accomplish, what plans we have for the company, and ask why we think eco-driving and racing is a good mix.
…Bragg defies the conventional stereotype of an eco-driver. He doesn’t drive a hybrid, nor does he drive insufferably slow. In fact, not only does he sponsor a 540-hp GT1 race car, get this: he’s a genuine car guy…
…”I’m trying to bring out the message to a greater audience, and there’s no better way right now than racing,” he says. He aims to help people save money on fuel, but at the same time wants to “show people that you can still be enthused by and love fast cars.”
Naturally, promoting economical and fuel-efficient driving practices while sponsoring a racing team raises some eyebrows, and Bragg is well aware of it. He argues, “I don’t need to win over any more of the environmentalists.” “They already do this; they’ve been reached. I want them to use the system, but I’m not trying to talk to them anymore. I’m trying to bring this out to everybody else.”
FuelClinic sponsors the MJK Racing Team as a marketing device – to get the “message” of eco-driving out beyond the environmentalist audience who are already “on-board” and need little convincing.
To make a real difference in the world, I feel we need to stretch ourselves beyond our “comfort zone” where people already agree with us. It’s not easy, but it’s where the opportunity for massive effect is.
No.55 FuelClinic Camaro takes 1st Place at SCCA South Atlantic Road Racing Championships on Sunday
DAYTONA, FL – Congratulations to Mike Kern and the MJK Racing Crew (Kurt, Nate, Shawn, Isaac, and Mike H.) with the #55 FuelClinic.com Camaro taking 1st place in the GT1 class at the SCCA South Atlantic Road Racing Championships at Daytona International Speedway on Sunday afternoon.
Sunday’s win was the highlight of a great weekend of racing at Daytona. On Saturday, Mike set a new personal track record - besting his previous record by 2/10ths of a second. Saturday afternoon Mike finished 4th in class against some very fast competition.
All of Mike’s hard work and preparation paid off, as the FuelClinic.com Camaro ran consistent and strong all weekend long. The new front brakes and brake bias system helped Mike come in to the corners more aggressively, and was a distinct advantage over other faster cars who had trouble in the twisty parts. Several of the fastest GT1 competitors failed to finish Sunday’s race due to a variety of mechanical failures, opening the door for Mike to win.
I was also very happy to have a few guests make it out for Saturday at the track, including Mike Block of the Orlando Examiner, and Dave Currie of Currie Designs, and Pat Foley of Pat Foley Photography. I hope you guys had fun! The best parts of any SCCA event is the number of great people, teams, and motorsports enthusiasts that gather.
More photos, video, and details will be added here as time permits.

Leilani Münter Races Hydrogen-powered Ford Focus in Viking Rally across Norway
Earlier this month the Electric Vehicle Symposium (EVS) held the Viking Rally in Norway – an international zero-emissions rally for hydrogen cars, electric cars, and plug-in hybrids. Leilani Münter (who is an eco-racing advocate, world famous race car driver, and self-proclaimed “hippy chick”) drove a hydrogen-powered Ford Focus in the race, despite a driveshaft problem that plagued the team throughout the multi-stage race.
The rally was organized in accordance with International Sporting Regulations (ISR), The Norwegian Sports Regulations (NSR) and Regulations for the event. The rules for the rally were interesting.
Teams start with zero points and the goal is to keep your points as low as possible. Penalty points are awarded to teams if they arrive late during a maximum time stage, arrive early OR late for an ideal time stage, arrive early OR late for a regularity test. For times trials (where speed is the goal), all drivers receive penalty points for the number of seconds it takes to complete the stage.
A video of Leilani, describing her goals at the race. Many more videos from the race are available here.
“I had a great time participating in the Viking Rally,” said Leilani, “this event brought together people from all over the world, uniting us through our mutual goal of using clean renewable energy instead of fossil fuels. It was an honor to be a part of such a symbolic and hopeful event.”
Eacy days updates from the race are available at Leilani’s website, with additional information from the organizers here.

Racing at Sebring with Mike Kern and Dalton Zehr in the FuelClinic.com Camaro
Just a quick note on Sebring. I’m exhausted, taking the day to relax and recharge, but wanted to pass along a few notes.
Mike Kern writes: Team did GREAT- Dalton got us up to 3rd in Enduro race, started 89 cars, but red flagged (rain) prior to half-way (WX-non-race) bummer.
Mike Kern with MJK Racing shared driving the FuelClinic.com camaro with an impressive young man named Dalton Zehr, an experienced racer from a family of racers.
Dalton Zehr is not just another driver trying to make it to the big times. He has an impressive background in racing which started nine years ago. This young man has already accomplished more in his racing career than most drivers hope for in a lifetime. He started racing when he was seven years old in Caldwell, Idaho in a class of dirt winged cars called box stocks. In his first race he placed second and his second race he won. He continued the year to win several more races and be the youngest kid to be moved up in class after only four races. (More about Dalton.)
This was also the debut of the new hero cards created by Shawn at S3 Creative Group – they were so popular that we ran out early… note to self, next time take 4 times as many! You can download the .pdf version of the new hero card here.
It was an intense 4 days, with lots of sun, fun, cars, racing, old and new friends. I’ll recap the event in a few days – along with photos and video highlights of the event.
FuelClinic.com Camaro Racing at 12 Hours of Sebring
We are pleased to announce MJK Racing will be competing with the FuelClinic.com Camaro in two separate events at this months 12 Hours of Sebring race this March 18th – 21st.

Mike Kern will race the FuelClinic.com Camaro in the Enduro on Thursday, and in the 30-minute Sprint on Friday. Mike will have a practice session earlier in the week, on Wednesday.
If you will be at Sebring this year, please stop by the garage-tent and say Hello.
Fuelishness! Marathon – Part 2: Plug-In Charging Stations; Mille Hybrid-Powered Race Recovery Vehicle; Omnivore Concept Engine
- Raleigh, N.C. to Install Plug-in Hybrid Charging Stations : Like the San Francisco-based program, drivers will access the charging stations through key-cards. In Raleigh, this means simple credit card access at a cost of about 2.5 cents per mile, while the SF-based program uses chargers provided by Coulomb Technologies at no cost, but are only available to members of the car-sharing programs City CarShare and Zipcar.
- Miller Industries Adds Eaton Hybrid-Powered Race Recovery Vehicle To Fleet : The debut of the colorful white and green vehicle as part of Miller’s 12-truck fleet at the famed Daytona International Speedway was so successful that Miller announced plans to have it added to the company’s fleet of race recovery vehicles that will be operating throughout 2009. Miller supplies race recovery trucks for a large number of NASCAR events.
- Geneva Preview: Lotus to unveil Omnivore concept engine : The Omnivore is specifically designed to take advantage of varying fuels and modern electronic control capabilities. Like most research engines, this is a single cylinder design that allows the Lotus engineers to more quickly make changes and study the effects. This is also a two-stroke design with an air assisted direct injection system provided by Orbital Corporation of Australia. Those interested in two-strokes may remember Orbital from the early nineties when a number of manufacturers were investigating two-stroke engines. The concept engine uses a mono-block layout with a single hunk of metal comprising the cylinder block and head and no poppet valves. Instead the ports are exposed by the piston’s motion. Variations in timing between intake and exhaust are achieved by valve in the exhaust port that traps the exhaust.
FuelClinic.com and MJK Racing Sponsorship Goals
FuelClinic started sponsoring MJK Racing last year, and we’ve enjoyed every minute of the time we’ve spent working with Mike and his team, and we look forward to continuing this sponsorship. But not everybody “gets it” – why a fuel efficiency site would sponsor an auto-racing team.
At first glance you might miss the connections, here are some of our thoughts and intentions…
- Energy conservation and fuel efficiency are topics important for everybody to consider, not just the tree-hugging bumper-stickered Prius drivers who aren’t too impressed with auto-racing. If the goal here at FuelClinic is to help conserve enough fuel that we can make a real difference in the market, when you think about it, the tree-hugging Prius drivers are pretty much already doing what they can to conserve fuel. It’s vitally important to reach out beyond the crowd of people already on board with our mission. (To the Prius drivers – you know we love you! But you see my point, right?)
- Automotive racing is quite literally the “NASA” of automotive engineering, the proverbial tip-of-the-spear for innovative engine technologies, systems reliability, safety improvements, and energy efficiency. Some of their best work finds its way to the consumer-level automobiles, and we benefit from the hard work and money spent in the research and development of the racing community.
- The topic of fuel efficiency can be pretty boring. We wanted to add some excitement to the discussion, to have something out of the ordinary that might get people’s attention. MJK Racing and Mike Kern in particular add a sense of something a little bigger than life. In person this guy gets attention, knows what he’s talking about, and can explain it to anyone. Just the kind of partner any business would love to have. (If you are interested in working with a real pro, Mike has additional sponsorship opportunities available.)
Motorsports are “going green” along with the rest of the world, and green-themed subjects like fuel efficiency and running a “green” team are more important than ever.
Its been said that race fans are the most loyal sports fans. I know that the access they can get to the drivers and cars at this level makes it a very “personal” sport, fans identify with their favorite drivers, and by proxy they identify with the things the drivers talk about.
All that, and on a personal level, I still enjoy the sounds of a fire-breathing V-8 engine… I just don’t drive one to work every day any more. Maybe that’s the biggest reason I feel this sponsorship makes sense to me. I can drive my gas-sipping econobox each day, careful not to accelerate too quickly, being a “smooth operator”, trying to conserve fuel… knowing in the back of my mind that on race day I’ll feast my eyes and ears on the high-octane super cars like Mike’s and my other (new) racing friends. It appeals to me. I can’t be alone in that. Look in the stands.
MJK Racing Releases New Race Car Video
MJK Racing just released a great new video over at YouTube, a visual history of Mike’s experience building and racing the car, with some behind the scenes pictures of the car, his team, and the tracks he’s raced. Some highlights include video of his spin-out in Daytona, some great photos of the car, and pictures of team, friends, and fans.
Better Mileage Using Ethanol Boosted Direct Injection
One of the most compelling arguments against ethanol states that there is “less heat energy” in a gallon of ethanol vs. a gallon of gasoline. When used in current automotive engines, the driver will find overall “miles-per-gallon” (MPG) mileage reduced, even as the “miles-per-gallon-of-gasoline” (MPGG) is increased substantially.
I’ve argued that once engineers begin to design engines to take advantage of the properties of ethanol (specifically the very high octane), that mileage and power would at least equal that of a gasoline engine. Over the last few weeks there have been announcements from Ricardo and Bentley that their engineers have done just that…
Ethanol Boosted Direct Injection or EBDI, takes full advantage of ethanol’s best properties – higher octane and higher heat of vaporization – to create a truly renewable fuel scenario that is independent of the cost of oil.
According to the press release, Ricardo claims they’ve boosted ethanol engines “to a level of performance that exceeds gasoline engine efficiency and approaches levels previously reached only by diesel engines.” (Diesel engines are approximately 30% more fuel efficient than gasoline engines.)
EBDI is another example of how professional racing is the NASA of the automotive industry, developing the full potential of automotive technologies that will benefit all of us.

MJK Racing Qualifies and Races in National Championship
While I was away, Mike Kern of Mike Kern Racing (a SCCA GT-1 racing team that we sponsor), qualified for the SCCA National Championships in Topeka Kansas.
He raced as a rookie nationals driver, starting 17th and moving up to 15th by the end of the race.Â
Mike said in a recent email: “Well the race was a real adventure. We started 17Th out of an 18 car field and finished 15Th., so at least we went the right direction. What a tough race week, if something can go wrong it will, but I glad we went and it created memories for a lifetime.”Â
I wish my wife and I could have been there in person for the race, but we had a wedding to attend (ours!).
We congratulate Mike and his crew for his success in overcoming all obstacles getting to and qualifying for the championship, and look forward to next year’s racing season!
MJK Racing Prepares for National SCCA GT-1 Class Finals in Topeka
Altamonte Springs, FL — Mike Kern and crew of the MJK Racing team is celebrating their entry of the #55 Delta Connection Academy / FuelClinic.com Camaro in the 2008 SCCA National Championship Runoffs in Heartland Park, Topeka to be held October 6th thru the 12th.
Each year, drivers race in 70 events across the country to qualify for one last, winner-take-all event in October–the National Championship Runoffs. Some of the most famous American racers have won at the Runoffs, including Bobby Rahal, Boris Said, Paul Newman, Scott Sharp and Skip Barber. There is a strong possibility that the next great American racing driver may be racing at the Runoffs this year.
Now that they have secured a spot at the track, the team is busy preparing the car for the race. Working late into the night, Mike and his volunteer crew are burning the midnight oil to build the car in order to have it inspected this weekend in Daytona.

“There’s a lot to get done in a short period of time” says Mike, as sweat drips from his forehead on a cool Florida evening. “We’ve just got in the new parts for the rear-end, I’ve got that almost put together now. I’m also adding an oil cooler to it, fabricating the mounts and fittings.”
In addition to fresh safety equipment, adding new sponsorship logos like FuelClinic.com, Mike has spent every bit of his free time going over every piece of this car. And he knows what he’s looking at – as Mike has literally built this car himself.
